Two Separate Week-Long Workshops with Flora Ojanen (USA), May 2014

Flora Ojanen, Alexander Technique Teacher and cellist

Flora D.H. Ojanen is an AmSAT certified Alexander Technique Teacher. She graduated from the Alexander Educational Center in Berkeley, California in 2002, under the direction of Giora Pinkas and John Baron.

Flora's teaching is influenced by her personal exploration of philosophical and practical aspects of Chinese Martial Arts and the Yoga traditions.

Besides raising two small children, Flora maintains a flourishing practice in San Francisco where she enjoys teaching people of all walks of life.

Workshop One - Working with our Senses

Experiencing our bodies as a continuous process of shifting sensations, rather than the usual way of experiencing it as a solid object, is a skill we are learning in the Alexander Technique. Tuning to our receptive field to harness the presence of the moment is a valuable tool. This way our intent for movement becomes clearer and more successful and our movements become more graceful and enjoyable.

Workshop Two - "Easy is Right" - Martial Arts and the Alexander Technique

Chuang Tzu says: "Easy is right. Begin right and you are easy. Continue easy, and you are right. The right way to go easy is to forget the right way and forgot that the going is easy."

Internal Martial Arts and the Alexander Technique have interesting aspects of their teachings in common. For instance, "circulating the energy through yielding" can be compared to Alexander's idea of non-doing and directing. Over time it can develop internal power and skilful movement. And "letting the chest sink and the back rise" can be compared to "lengthening and widening the back".

Also "co-ordination of the whole" and "awareness of opposing forces in the body" are found in both traditions. Through some simple Chi Gong movements we will investigate those ideas, and apply them to daily activities such as pulling, pushing, reaching, walking.

Dates: Tuesday 20th – Thursday 23rd May 2014
Times: Tuesday 2.30pm - 6.30pm
Wednesday 9.30am – 4.00pm
