Autumn scene

Welcome to the Autumn 2014 edition of the newsletter. We hope you enjoy it! A special welcome if you are new to the Alexander Technique mailing list. We will not fill up your inbox as you will be only sent an e-newsletter about 3-4 times a year. Have a great Autumn!

A human being is a part of a whole, called by us 'universe', a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires   — Albert Einstein

Alexander Technique Congress 2015 News

Audience at Alexander Technique Congress

Over 500 people have already registered for the international Alexander Technique Congress which will be held in Limerick, Ireland in 2015.

I am happy to announce that Niall Kelly and Glenna Batson have joined me as directors, working hard to create an amazing event where everyone feels welcome. This Congress will be a place where anyone interested can share the magic of the Alexander Technique. It will give you extra life tools and inspiration to radically strengthen your confidence in your self. Please come with an open mind, an adventurous spirit, and a sense of humour.

I am delighted that Rome Earle and Judith Stransky have agreed to highlight the Congress by taking part in a panel discussion and both will give public interviews. Rome Earle is one of two Alexander Technique teachers alive today who trained with F.M. Alexander. After studying in his teacher training class from 1949 to 1951 she moved to the United States without finishing the course. Twenty years later, after getting married and raising four children, Rome returned to London to do her last year of training with Patrick Macdonald, receiving her certification in 1974. Rome has taught on several training courses in California. Judith Stransky was instrumental in the promotion and foundation of the Alexander Technique in the United States. Trained by Judy Leibowitz, she was a co-Director of the American Center for the Alexander Technique (ACAT), and co-Founder of both ACAT WEST and the Alexander Training Institute of Los Angeles as far back as the 1960's.

The Congress will take place on the University of Limerick campus, known for its natural beauty, peaceful atmosphere, and sophisticated service. Most participants will sleep, eat, and learn on campus. Exchange rooms and breakout rooms will be available all day long so you can exchange work, chat, or discuss all aspects of the Work to your heart's content. We have set aside special rooms for trainees or newly qualified teachers, where they can work comfortably with others whose experience is similar to their own. We've also planned plenty of top quality entertainment to suit every taste with Irish musicians, a limerick competition, and a gala dinner on the last night.

Discount for newsletter subscribers

We have made every effort to make this an affordable Congress. You'll find plenty of value for your money! There will be a special rate of €126 off for everyone on our mailing list who registers before November 1st, 2014. Just enter the discount code is AT101 when registering.

For more details of the Congress please see the AT Congress website →

Three-day workshop with Wolfgang Weiser, Sweden, October 7th - 9th

'The ABC Alexander Technique Workshop', Part 2

Wolfgang Weiser, Alexander Technique teacher

The ABC workshop is based on the contents of:
A – Anatomy, function and design
B – Balance experience, balance work, balance art
C - Circus skills and new ways of movement

After his last very successful visit the Alexander Centre is delighted to welcome Wolfgang back for another fun-filled week of learning! This will be a practical workshop providing you with a number of unusual activities. As a follow up, regarding the abilities of participants, we will explore balancing on the floor, on the balance board or on the tightrope. We will also work with juggling and other physical-thinking activities. Participants will gain new ideas and experience about their balance, habits, co-ordination and movement. The basic idea is to use unfamiliar activities to give the participants a chance to work with the Alexander Technique as psycho-physical education.

About Wolfgang Weiser

Wolfgang trained in England and Germany between 1993 and 1997. He is an internationally-recognised AT teacher and has taught the AT at the Theatre University of Stockholm and worked with dancers and musicians all over Sweden, including the Dance and Theatre Festival in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Prior experience includes working as a performer, actor, dancer and juggler since 1984. He also holds a BA in education in theatre and is researching movement formation in educational science as well running a residence project on the Island of Gotland called 'Vibrationplant', where he gives summer courses with Trish Hemingway.

Weekend workshop with Caren Bayer, USA, December 6th - 7th

Caren Bayer, Alexander Technique teacher

From the Ground Up

Using principles of both the Alexander Technique and Tai Chi, this two-day workshop will explore the essential energetic directions and stabilizing forces that lead to greater freedom and ease. Students will learn how to connect to the ground while building a steady, unwavering centre. From there, we will focus on unwinding unnecessary tensions and building neural pathways that quietly, yet powerfully, bring the body and mind back into alignment. This will be a hands-on, experiential class for every level.

Caren will offer private lessons on Monday the 8th December.

About Caren Bayer

Caren Bayer founded Manhattan Center for the Alexander Technique, in 2001, and has maintained a private practice in New York City since 1984. She received her certification in London from Patrick MacDonald, and her post-graduate certification from Rivka Cohen. Caren was a faculty member at the Rivka Cohen School for the Alexander Technique and at the Institute for the Alexander Technique (directed by Thomas Lemens). She has been on the faculty of Pacific College for Oriental Medicine and currently has a teaching affiliation at The New School for Social Research. As a former dancer, and a longtime student of the martial arts, yoga and meditation, Caren brings 30 years of movement research and awareness to her teaching. Please visit her website at
